As long as I'm cleaning out my closets, I figured I might as well get mbpalaver out of mothballs. The annual Annunciation/Holy Trinity clothing drive is this weekend. You can drop off "gently used clothing for men, women and children, coats, blankets and small useful household items that are in working order" this Saturday, November 8, from 9 am to 5 pm, in the parking lot at Annunciation Church at 3810 Massachusetts Ave. What's in your closet? I found the scents of the '70s in mine.

It's that time of year again: time to clean our your closets and bring a bag or two to the annual clothing drive hosted by Holy Trinity and Annunciation churches. It's very easy to donate -- just pull into Annunciation's lot on Mass. Ave. and a volunteer will grab your loot and give you a tax form. Every year we partner with Annunciation Church for a drive that benefits agencies serving the homeless in DC, including many of the agencies who receive support from the Holy Trinity Tithe. The drive collects clothing, blankets and linens, small and useful household items (like kitchen utensils and appliances, not things like flower vases) and small furniture items that would fit in a regular size sedan. Please drop off new and gently used items in the Annunciation parking lot.

Sister Simone Campbell, the leader of the "Nuns on the Bus" tour for social justice who spoke at the DNC convention last month, is speaking at Holy Trinity Catholic Church's Social Justice Kick-Off event ("Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Vatican II and Renewing Our Call to Social Justice") this Saturday morning, October 6, from 9 am to noon in the theater (on O Street between 35th and 36th Streets in Georgetown). You can drop off donations of gently used clothing and household goods at Church of the Annunciation, at 3810 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Saturday 9 am to 4 pm, and Sunday 9 am to 2 pm. The church is on Mass. just west of Wisconsin, and they make it very easy for you to swing into the parking lot, drop off your bags of stuff, grab a tax form, and drive further up Mass. Ave. to Crate & Barrel to fill your newly created space with more stuff.

If your "walk-in" closet's light has been out for three months but you haven't fixed it because you haven't been able to find the time or the guts to clear a space for a stepladder, for instance, you might want to cull some things out for the annual Holy Trinity/Annunciation clothing drive in DC this weekend.
You can drop off clean, gently-used clothing at Annunciation Catholic Church, at 39th and Massachusetts Avenue, NW, on Saturday, November 22, from 8:00 to 5:00, and Sunday, November 23 (my Dad's birthday), from 8:00 to 2:00. It' will be helpful to the volunteers if you sort your clothes and mark the bags (women's, men's, children's). They make drop-off quite easy: just pull up in the parking lot, hand your bags to a volunteer, and pick up a tax form. They will also accept household items. Food & Friends is holding it's annual private food and shopping party at the Spring Valley Crate & Barrel early this year, just in time for the post-election what-am-I-supposed-to-do-with-all-my-time-now blahs.
Crate and Barrel's DC store will close its doors to the public on Thursday, November 6th, and host an exclusive evening of shopping, hors d'oeuvres and raffle prizes just for Food & Friends' best supporters. Culinary bites will be provided by local restaurants and, when you shop, Crate and Barrel will donate a percentage of their proceeds to support our services to those in the community facing some of life's most difficult challenges.
Sponsorships are available beginning at $175 and include tickets to the event, as well as additional promotional opportunities, and Individual tickets are $35.

Among the many opportunities to make a difference in your community, mentoring a young person in need is surely one of the most valuable. Here in Washington, Mentoring ToDay provides such an opportunity. A friend of mine serves on the board, and describes the organization this way:
Mentoring ToDAY serves kids getting out of Oak Hill, DC's juvenile facility, to help them reintegrate into the community after release. Mentors commit to three hours per week for a year, and help the youth with all aspects of life -- going back to school, finding jobs, finding housing, and avoiding the activities that landed them in Oak Hill in the first place. Mentoring ToDAY fills a huge gap in services for these kids, who often have never had a sustained, stable relationship with an adult.
