What an incredible week. Here are two friends, one of whom came all the way from Belfast to be part of the action, at the corner of 14th and U sometime after 11:30 Tuesday night, after hundreds of people had already spilled into the streets but just before the crowds managed to shut down traffic. The optical illusions (including the phantom flag) created by my shaky camera action fit with the hallucinatory feeling on the street, where neighbors had come out of their homes to bang pots and pans, people were honking and yelling out car windows, a Safeway truck tried to maneuver through the throngs of people, strangers were high-fiving a guy in a wheelchair rolling down the sidewalk in front of us, a woman I've never seen before grabbed my shoulder as she passed me crossing the street, and some fool climbed the street sign at 14th and U -- all this in a drizzle on a school night.
The Washington Post's video at the same corner will give you a flavor of the mood. I can't wait for the inauguration.
