This last week of summer, measured by Labor Day rather than the autumnal equinox, should be a time of last-chance summer ease, when you get to go to restaurants that don't take reservations without waiting, and those that do without planning ahead, when there are no cars on the road and plenty of parking spots in the garage. But this year, between the Democratic National Convention and the US Open, I've got nothing but multitasking when I get home. There's no doubt about it, this DNC convention is an historic moment, could represent a turning point in world history, and I teared up before Senator Kennedy even took the stage tonight, but don't forget during breaks in the action to tune to USA Network for coverage of another great competition. This time Rafa is rated #1, and Roger #2, and Roger has a hurdle named Djokovic in his half of the draw. I'm sure glad tonight I switched to USA after the hoopla in Denver died down, because I got to watch the ever-classy James Blake defeat nineteen-year-old Donald Young in a five-set match that was so good that Dubliner and I sent each other nearly identical criss-crossing emails reading "Are you watching this?"
I took the above photo of John Isner at the Legg Mason tournament in DC a couple of weeks ago. He's not even seeded at the US Open, but he's a popular player in Washington following his appearance in the finals against Andy Roddick last year, and a popular player with this gaggle of teenagers.
