Screen on the Green starts its weekly run tonight at sunset (around 8 p.m). For the next five Monday nights, you can catch a free screening of a classic movie on the National Mall between 4th and 7th Streets (between the National Gallery of Art (West Building) and Air and Space Museum).
For tips about what to bring and when to stake out a spot, see the event's website, which also says that "movies play on except in extreme weather, and there are NO rain days. For updates call 877-262-5866."
Several years ago, a few friends and I had enjoyed the first 15 minutes or so of The Philadelphia Story when the skies opened up and the movie was turned off (lightning might have played a role). We vowed to do a movie night to watch the rest of the movie but it never happened. And my new nubuck sandals were permanently rain-spattered. So, just to be safe, even though the forecast for tomorrow includes only a slight chance of thunderstorms, bring an umbrella, and wear waterproof shoes, particularly given that I saw a few sprinkles in DC on St. Swithin's Day.
Here's the schedule.
- July 16, 2007: Annie Hall
- July 23, 2007: The Thing (From Another World)
- July 30, 2007: Wait Until Dark
- August 6, 2007: All the Kings Men
- August 13, 2007: Casablanca
Style side note: I keep fluctuating between italicizing movie titles and putting them in quotes. My instinct is that they should be italicized, but in articles about Screen on the Green itself, for example, although Washingtonian uses italics, The Washington Post uses quotation marks (and Forbes does neither and contents itself with using all caps). The New York Times also uses quotation marks for movie titles. Can anyone shed light on this? I want a rule. The uncertainty is killing me!
