To many, the image above is ubiquitous, banal, and/or a cause for railing against charred coffee, pretentious sizing, and the homogenization of American cities. But to those of us working in a corner of southwest Washington with no coffee or lunch options other than our office cafeterias and, curiously, a five-star hotel, that "now open" sign was greeted Friday with euphoria. Oh sure, there was already a Starbucks a ten minute walk away -- but it was ten minutes of walking under a drippy overpass, alongside train tracks, and across highway on and off ramps. The new Starbucks is pleasantly situated across from the Mandarin Oriental; benches on a nicely landscaped esplanade offer a break from the workaday world. And if Starbucks does well, can Au Bon Pain be far behind? Cosi? We're not asking for much.
As Pudding Man so succinctly put it Friday, oh happy day.
In fact, I found myself humming this the rest of the afternoon:

About the new Starbucks (which I hope to visit soon and probably daily), all I can is hallelujah!! It's about time.
As for all of the Brady Bunch references, who knew you all were such fans?!!

I was praying for this event the entire time I worked in that nabe! For me, gratification delayed was, in fact, denied. Sigh.
